Please read our Terms below for details. This is just a beautiful antique knife offered here in an excellent sheath, all found in superb condition. With a thick, hand-forged carbon steel daddley-style blade forged by Lamson & Goodnow some time in the 1800's in their legendary Shelbourne Falls works in Massachusetts, this knife was made to compete with the better-known (though NOT better) knives made by Russell in their Green River Works.
It was hafted with walnut over its full and tapered tang using steel pins and bolstered with clad steel and well over 100 years later it's still rock solid enough to use for hunting or self-defense. It was made with a blade that's as good as it gets--RAZOR sharp, having been professionally edged for this sale. It's stamped, LAMSON & GOODNOW MFG. PATENTED MARCH 6th, 1860, though they continued to make this style for years after the patent date, so it's probably not THAT old. Still, to say it's a Civil War Era piece, though, is absolutely true. The knife is 10.5" long with a 6" blade but by any measure this is a fine antique specimen and whether you want it for use or for display it'd be hard to beat. Like all carbon steel knives of this vintage it's got a super-fine edge that's easy to hone and a pleasure to use.
Its beautiful design just invites the hand to hold and use it. It's clear the piece was meant to be as beautiful as it is useful, and it is VERY useful! It's as strong and solid as a tank and will last a couple of muzzle-loading lifetimes if properly maintained. Both knife and sheath have excellent materials, craftsmanship and design, and whether you want them as trade bait on your blanket, at the next black powder/rendezvous, for use in the field, or simply to display among your finest collector pieces, this is an exceptional knife that is sure to get noticed wherever it goes, and and something you'll rightly be proud to pass along to future generations.
