This antique Marbles Woodcraft hunting knife bears the desirable Gladstone, Mich. Pat'd 1916 tang stamp and likely dates to the 1920s.
It is an honest survivor with roughly a century of history behind it. Is this a safe queen? It's a museum piece.
This isn't the kind of knife that spent its life hidden away in a display case. It appears to have lived the life it was built for, carrying the marks, patina, and character that only decades of real use can create. It is a tangible piece of American outdoor history from an era when Marbles knives accompanied hunters, trappers, and woodsmen into the field. The blade has been modified due to extensive field use and sharpening during its lifetime, resulting in a more compact and practical profile. Despite its age, it remains razor sharp.
Based on the mature, undisturbed patina, it appears it may not have been sharpened for several decades, though that cannot be stated with certainty. The stacked leather handle has a slight amount of movement, which is very common on Marbles knives of this age.
The leather has been carefully conditioned with a blend of beeswax and propolis to help preserve and protect it for the future while maintaining its antique character. The leather sheath appears consistent with others from the period and may be original, although that cannot be guaranteed. It has been modified with a small cutout that allows the shortened blade to sit lower in the sheath. The front is tooled with the name Johnny B. Interestingly, the collection this knife came from also contained another knife dating to the 1930s with a name tooled in the exact same style, which could further suggest the personalization dates back many decades. A leather lanyard is attached to the handle and appears to be an old personalization intended to improve retention and control, particularly during thrusting.
The sheath shows evidence of having been heavily treated with oils of an unknown type sometime in its past. Because of this, the choice was made not to apply any additional leather treatment. This is not a restored example, nor has it been polished into something it never was. It proudly wears a century of honest age and history. If you're looking for perfection, this isn't it.
If you're looking for an authentic antique Marbles with undeniable character and the kind of presence that can only be earned over generations, this is a remarkable piece that deserves appreciation.
