Was the knife designed by Al Mar that was a springboard to his starting his own company. The late and former Green Beret Mar became a knife designer for Gerber after leaving the service.
The C425 has become a highly desired collectible and you seldom see them for sale. This one is very well made like most Gerber products; fit and finish is excellent. The blade is made of mirror-polished high speed tool steel and is in near mint condition -- never used or sharpened with just a couple sheathing marks visible. The second and third-to-last pix above show to spots on the top of the guard that remained after verdigris was removed where knife was in contact with the sheath for too long a time. The handle is made of nicely grained ebony wood, dating this knife back to the mid-70s. The sheath is a smooth and luxurious dark brow which fits this knife like a glove and is stamped C425 on the back with Pat. Pending as the final line (see pic).I will regret parting with this one, but i've made the decision to sell all of my 40-year accumulation of knives. The item "Al Mar design Gerber Mod.
