For sale here is a one of a kind Mid 1940's Randall Model 3 Fighting Knife. The knife is complete with scabbard and stone. The knife has an overall length of 11 3/4" and has a blade length of 6 5/8". The knife is marked with the Randall Made Orlando, Fla.
Logo on the left upper spine and has the name Cecil Ailes on the right upper spine. The knife has a brass crossguard. Someone at some point added a custom machined silver and black aluminum handle with a screw on pommel. The handle is very well made and very well fitted and feels great in the hand. The black portions of the handle are painted and almost all of the black paint remains.
The blade shows age, use, carry, sharpening, some spots of age grey, and some pitting, along with some factory grind marks. The blade does have a few small nicks, but these are easier to feel than to see. The point might have just a hint of bend, but is near perfect. The brass crossguard shows nice patina and age. The handle also shows carry, age, use, patina, and wear with some nicks and light dings. The handle shows patina and has been with the knife for many many years.
The handle feels like a solid piece and shows no casting lines, and appears to be a very finely machined piece. The screw off pommel cap works nicely, but i have no idea what purpose it serves, as there is no room for storage.
The handle is tight and fits perfectly. There is no wobble or wiggle or rattle or anything of the sort. It is just a perfect fit. I couldn't find anything definitive on the owner, but this does remind me of a US Navy style knife with handles like this often built on ships. The scabbard is present and is an H.
The scabbard shows heavy use, age, and patina, and appears almost black. The scabbard is lightly stiffened, but is still supple and strong. The back of the scabbard has the HH Heiser maker stamp and someone has carved the name TEX below the maker mark. The scabbard is also marked 7 for the blade length. The stone is present, but does show some use. The stone is light grey in color with some darkening from use. The stone snap is missing the male end and has a plain silver female snap. The throat snap is present and functional and has a translucent Randall marked snap that i read was used in 1946. The snap works well, but the strap is almost broken into just below the snap on the female end. I believe this could be repaired, but some care will need to be used when opening and closing the snap. The knife fits the scabbard nicely and is correct for this knife. I cannot say when or why the handle was replaced, but it really looks great and was done very nicely. This is a very nice early Randall Model 3 that is definitely one of a kind and is an excellent conversation piece. The item "1940's US Navy WW2 Era Custom Named Randall 3-7 Model 3 7 Fighting Knife.
