Please read our Terms below for details. PLEASE NOTE: We take our photos in natural light outdoors and as a result there are sometimes reflections or shadows or glare shown in the blades. In person none of these exist; we will say so in the description if it may be otherwise. This very fine skinning knife has so much going for it that it's hard to know where to start.
It was hand-forged in Solingen, Germany in the 1950's-60's by Anton Wingen, a company best known in this country, probably, for their exquisitely crafted stag-handled tableware. We can date this knife by its original black leather sheath, which is fairly rare to be found in such beautifully preserved condition. Wingen made knives of every description, however, and none finer than this.
It's found here with beautiful sambar stag handle scales, and a hand-forged carbon steel blade that still retains quite a bit of its original factory shine, as you can see in the photos. It enjoys a solid german silver finger guard, echoed in the rivets as well as in its solid pommel. It is embossed with the company's "Othello" logo and the usual markings on one side but somewhat unusually, it also has markings of its original distributor, Gutmann Cutlery. It was made 9-3/8" long with a 5-1/8" blade that's 3/16 thick, tapering towards both point and pommel. For the purpose of this sale we've had this knife professionally edged to a WICKEDLY sharp, RAZOR's edge, the likes of which most knives will never know--FAR sharper than when it first left the factory. As German-made knives go this one is above and beyond the normal high quality.
