Vintage 1972 LLOYD HALE Stag Fixed Blade Patch Knife Muzzleloader Leather Sheath
This is a vintage, Lloyd Hale Patch Knife dated "1-6-72", as engraved on the blade by Lloyd. Also engraved on the blade is "Hale - Patch knife" and "#1". Hale, and he confirmed that this is, in fact, a knife that he made early on in his career.

He had been making knives since 1967, and was living in Texarkana, TX in 1972. He was introduced to muzzleloading rifles by Billy Ray "BR" Hughes, one of the founders of the American Bladesmith Society (ABS) in 1976, and Secretary since 1984. At the time, Lloyd was introduced to the editor of Muzzleloader Magazine, William Scurlock.

He recalled making this knife for either Mr. Scurlock, or a friend of his because it is engraved with the #1.

Although it was so long ago, he admits that it may have been made for someone else - he made about 12 of them. The knife comes with a leather sheath with belt loop and keeper strap. Lloyd told me he did not make the sheath (and I cannot make out the maker's stamp on the back). This knife comes from a life-long collection of knives that were well-taken care of, and with very few exceptions, properly stored.

Hale did not recall the blade steel, but it is in perfect condition. The handle is made from a single piece of stag, in excellent condition - no cracks, checks or chips. The single finger guard and butt cap are brass. There are 2 black and 1 red spacer below the guard.

The knife is in excellent condition, and its 44 years old! The blade is clean, with no marks - never used or sharpened. And a piece of knifemaking history. You are always welcome to contact me for additional pictures. We will consider, and respond to all reasonable Best Offers on any knife.

Never used, carried or sharpened. Windy City Knives is a dealer of custom, handmade and collectable knives.

Many of our knives are new from the makers, including Crusader Forge, Direware, Olamic Cutlery, Dwaine Carrillo, Kevin Hoffman, Bill Ruple, Rick Hinderer, Greg Medford, Brian Nadeau, Jake Hoback, Stavros Gizelis, and many others! We look forward to serving you, and appreciate your business!
