Rare 1930's Case Tested XX Knife Axe Hatchet Combo Set Hunting AX With Sheath

Case & Sons Cutlery of Bradford PA. This particular set would date from the 1930?

This set is in nice all original condition. It was used, but remains tight and well cared for. The photos will best tell the story. The knife blade has sharpening marks, but the blade retains all of its original shape.

The flair head Hatchet has some scuffs and pin prick oxidation spots, but remains unsharpened. Both the blade and hatchet fit the handle perfectly with absolutely no play or wobble. The locking lever works perfectly and holds both the blade and hatchet firmly in place. The handles are of a green color and have a marbled appearance.

Per the 1938 Case XX Catalog the handles of this set are made of Onyx Celluloid. Some may refer to this composition type of handle material as Pyremite or Pyralin as well as it simulates the look of pearl. The 1938 Case catalog listed the Case XX Knife Ax Combo as patterns #961 as having Indestructible Pearl Handles It was also offered in pattern numbers #661 genuine stag, and #261 Walnut wood handles. Handles on this one are nice with good green color and no damage. Case referred to this set as a Knife-Ax Combination Hunting set pattern number #961 with interchangeable flair head axe/hatchet and knife blades that fit into the same handle.

This particular Case Tested XX tang stamp was used from 1920 to 1940 so this set is one of the very earliest of this long latch style. The combination leather Sheath bears the patent date of February 5, 1935 marked on the sheath, and patent date October 22, 1935 on the ruler/locking leaver latch. The Leather sheath is the original early style marked with the patent date. Sheath is still functional, but does show its age with some loose stitching as well as some splits and age wear as shown. Knife retainer strap is missing. Regardless all in all it? S still a very nice set.

After all, it is some 80 or so years old. It would be a nice addition to any collection. Additional photos are available upon request. S sole responsibility to determine if any item will suit their needs.
